5 killed, several injured at Nkawkaw while a spare driver was racing another driver for passengers


At least five (5) passengers have been confirmed dead in another fatal accident on Accra to Kumasi Highway. The accident occurred at Kwahu Oframase near Nkawkaw on Sunday.
The suspect 23-year-old driver Shadrack Boadu, was in charge of a Mercedes Sprinter bus with registration number GC 6521 – 21 with eleven passengers on board from Accra towards Kumasi.
However, on reaching a section of the road at Kwahu Oframase on Nkawkaw -Accra highway, he rammed into a stationary Daf Articulator truck with Burkina – Faso registration number BF 9290D603 parked at the nearside shoulder of the road when facing Nkawkaw direction, after wrong overtaking.
“On the scene, we realized there were 11 passengers on board including the driver so we rushed them to the Holy Family Hospital while one woman was sent to Kenop Caere hospital but upon arrival, the doctor on duty pronounced 5 dead. The bodies are currently in the morgue for autopsy and the police are now trying o reach the family members of the victims. The remaining two who experienced a series of injuries are receiving treatment: others have been transferred to the Koforidua Teaching hospital”, the police commander said.
According to the police, an eyewitness Ebenezer Kojo Nyador disclosed that “the drivers were coming in a subsection, that is two or three coming together and you know these buses they like to take passengers along the road. So it looked as if they were chasing each other with the hope the winner or the leading bus will pick passengers so the driver didn’t pay attention and rove into that stationary truck”.
This comes after nine (9) students of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW) also died while over a dozen others were seriously injured in a fatal accident at Asuboi a community along the Accra to Kumasi Highway Sunday, March 13, 2022, at about 3:30 am.
